Bone Fractures

Fractures Can Present Major Challenges

Fracture management is a common problem encountered in veterinary medicine. However, some fracture cases, such as comminuted bones which are located in areas with poor blood supply, can present major challenges.

Traditional methods of fracture repair, including bone plating or pinning, often yield unsatisfactory results. Many of these fractures typically progress to a non-union. ACell Vet products are recommended for treatment of infected, contaminated, comminuted, and non-union fracture sites.

Scientifically Advanced Healing without Callous

ACell Vet, which features extracellular matrix technology, offers a more scientifically advanced approach to healing fractures. Cases treated with ACell Vet devices bypass callus formation and go directly to bony union resulting in more effective healing of difficult fractures.

ACell Vet devices promote angiogenesis and recruit progenitor cells that can differentiate into site specific tissue—in this case bone. This site specific remodeling of the bone can heal difficult fractures without the formation of callus.

The Treatment Process

Either the lyophilized sheet or the ACell Vet Powder can be used to treat fractures. The ACell Vet product is applied when performing normal, open reduction with internal fixation. Wrap the affected area with a lyophilized sheet or sprinkle the Powder into and around the fracture site.

It’s important to get the material around the fracture as completely as possible -- 180 degrees at a minimum. However, don’t create more trauma to the area just to increase the contact area with the ACell Vet material. Lay the material into the area and close routinely.
